FACET development at The Arts Center of Mississippi, July 31, 2025

FACET is an immersive experience guided by daniel johnson blending music and video across three turntables and projections mapping surfaces across the space. Broadcast footage cascades across site specific fabric installation, concealed and revealed while johnson shapes the space with a collage of sound on three turntables. This improvisation with prepared clips and vinyl grapples with our public memory of life beyond the screen, as seen on tv.FACET builds on the work of SUBMIND and the Mr. Muddle projects. With support from the&#38;nbsp;TBD Fund of Sipp Culture in partnership with the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and an Artistic Assistance grant from Alternate ROOTS, johnson is further developing this work with audiences over three upcoming performances. These performances will be documented by The Works with audience facilitated critical feedback by Monique Davis.

Following this critical development process, FACET will debut in 2026. Stay tuned here for dates!

Homegrown Uticapart of the Arts for Everybody national campaign

Homegrown Utica celebrates the rich legacy of rural self-determination and artistic voice in the Utica community. Part of the national campaign Arts for Everybody, Homegrown Utica sought to prove how the arts can lead to healthier people and healthier communities. Following johnson’s relationship building artwork with Sipp Culture and Jackson-Hinds Comprehensive Health Centers in Utica, these two institutional partners joined with the Town of Utica to become a Site Team in Arts for Everybody and invited johnson to be a Cultural Strategist to facilitate a Community Advisory Group to design and implement their Utica Arts for Everybody project. johnson worked with this Community Advisory Group (CAG) to define their goals and implement a strategy. The primary outcomes defined by the group in March 2023:&#38;nbsp; 1) address food access in their 39175 area code, 2)&#38;nbsp;

strengthen sustainable working relationships among Utica residents, and 3) reactivate their Main Street as a welcoming site for the neighboring towns and former residents.

Homegrown Utica consisted of the creation of the Utica Food Club, a town mural on the local library, an artisti residency at Utica Elementary/Middle School, two community-based multi-month art engagements, a Spring programming calendar of agricultural and arts programming at the library and community center, and the mounting of Homegrown Utica Fest on Main Street July 27, 2024. In the course of the work, johnson faciltiated the CAG, the Utica Food Club, the Food Club Working Group and then Leadership Team, the Homegrown Utica Fest committee, the four commissioned artists, community partnerships with the Volunteer Fire Department, Utica Police Department, and Library, a Significant Developments artist organizer team of five, and the relationship of the Site Partners; Utica Town Council, Sipp Culture, and Jackson-Hinds Comprehensive Health Centers. johnson additionally was the point person for the relationship with the national teams from National League of Cities, One Nation One Project, and University of Florida Center for Arts in Medicine researchers.

	Formed in February 2023, the Utica Arts for Everybody Community Advisory Group (CAG) was a six member group of residents connected to Main Street, the Site Partners, the local school, and a long-time local dance team the Mahogany Dancers. This core group of residents met on a monthly basis to identify the goals of the project, conceive the means by which we should pursue the goals, guide the design of the calls for public art, serve as selection panel for all art commissions, guide community engagement decisions, and advise on the programs and events as they came into being and were implemented.&#38;nbsp; This core group eased connections and communications with local institutions partnering in the work and were ambassadors for the project in Utica, inviting friends and neighbors to participate and answering questions about the work in the course of their daily activities.&#38;nbsp;

	The loss of the Sunflower Grocery Store in 2014 is one of three major plot points in every conversation about food in Utica. The closure of Utica High School in 1996, then the closure of the t-shirt factory across from the Sunflower, and finally the closure of the grocery store. The first two moved jobs predominantly held by women out of town and with them their weekly grocery budget. All three represented the loss of local communication channels; keeping up with other families at school events, hearing the latest gossip at work, finding out about the next garage sale or rodeo while in line to buy milk and eggs. The conversation had moved from how to attract a grocery store to how we could work together to get groceries in Utica. At the end of a long meeting in June, CAG Member James Owens said, “This may sound strange, but have y’all ever heard of a grocery cooperative?”

The Utica Food Club first met in August 2023 at the Utica Community Center. Through the Fall the group shared stories to identify the staple goods they can never be without in their kitchen, formed a Working Group to research the prospect of establishing direct wholesale and producer relationships, and worked to program a Spring calendar with workshops so they could learn together how to grow and store food, find the best bargains at the store, and use plants as medicine. After issuing a request for proposals, the Working Group hired Research Associate Rene’ Hardwick in January to identify local farms, product producers, and whole sale suppliers. Beginning in February 2024 the Working Group along with other “host” Food Club members held workshops on topics including fermentation, navigating grocery apps, homesteading, and plant medicine. By June, a Leadership Team with Officers had formed, work on Bylaws and a Membership structure was underway, and the first community produce order had been submitted to Sunrise Produce. The Utica Food Club has now completely
 transitioned to community control.&#38;nbsp;

	Over the course of Fall 2023 into Winter 2024, the Community Advisory Group issued a Call for Artists to submit proposals to engage the Utica community in ways ranging from traditional public art works to arts-based community engagements and socially engaged art projects. Parallel the CAG arranged for a school artist residency program to be held at Utica Elementary/Middle School and issued a call for artists to design that project. The CAG ultimately selected three artists for public works: Gavin Bird from Jackson, MS to engage a community-design process and paint a new town mural, Stephanie McKee-Anderson from Picayune, MS to engage residents in a quilting themed community engagement exploring the recipes and remedies passed down our maternal line, and Sara Green of New Orleans with her Food Dignity Project exploring the relationships between us, our food, and food producers. Kira Cummings was selected for her project Puzzle on Your Plate for the school artist residency. The engagement with these art works and the various art &#38;amp; agricultural workshops through the Spring deepened the public discourse of all participants around the role and meaning of food in Utica.

	On July 27, 2024 over 1000 people came to celebrate all things “Homegrown Utica” in this little town of 670 people. The Volunteer Fire Department, Utica Police Department, Town Council, Evelyn Taylor Majure Library, Sipp Culture, Jackson-Hinds Clinic, Utica Elementary/Middle School, and numerous business owners and community organizations came together as an invitation to work together and lift up all the assets Utica, MS has. With a primary goal of cultivating sustainable working relationships within the town, the festival was always seen as a project to help us learn how we all work together and to iron out the details of what that means when you are in the thick of it together. As a rural town which had lost so many social spaces where ideas and news are exchanged, the festival was a grand invitation to gather, learn about each other, and identify who wants to be part of this Homegrown Utica movement. Homegrown Utica Fest helped town residents to claim roles in the process and identify other local creatives to get involved ~ 28 Marketplace vendors, 10 Food Vendors, and 13 Community Organizations took part with 46% of total sales at the festival going to Utica creators and 76% of total sales to creators within 30 miles of Main Street!

		<description>

2023-24 Community Fellow
with Utica Institute Museum for Diaspora Solidarities Lab
The Diaspora Solidarities Lab (DSL) is a multi-institutional Black feminist partnership that supports solidarity work in Black and Ethnic Studies conducted by undergraduates, graduate students, faculty members, and community partners who are committed to transformative justice and accountable to communities beyond the Western academy.
The DSL Community Fellows are non-academic/non-institutionally affiliated community organizers, artists, cultural workers or groups who collaborate on projects with other participants and innovate DSL-sponsored projects of their own. The DSL Community Fellows program invests in collaborative community work and supporting practitioners doing the work where they are.
As a 2023-24 DSL Community Fellow, johnson continues to expand his work in Utica, MS, returning to a relationship with the Utica Institute Museum (UIM) and the work of Director Jean Greene and Hinds-Utica CC English Professor Dan Fuller. Working together to build on the UIM bus tour through the Town of Utica, johnson, Greene, and Fuller are collaborating to create a site specific museum interpretive device bringing oral histories to life at specific public sites of memory for the Utica Institute and founder William H. Holtzclaw.
 Inspired by the 1904 Brownie No. 2, johnson is building a small, handheld device which captures the scene in front of you under layers of visual and audio memory. The Kodak Brownie was the first affordable, portable camera for everyday people. This camera democratized access to capturing our memories on film and creating displays of ones life and memory in image in their home. This interpretive device is the same size and must be held and viewed in the same way as the Brownie viewfinder, but instead of taking pictures, it will present a ghostly image to the viewer of a site of memory cast over the site as it exists today. Dr. Holtzclaw opened the Utica Institute in 1904 and the physical experience of holding and operating the device brings a somatic resonance between the contemporary viewer and the Utica Institute Museum alumni arriving as some of the schools first students.&#38;nbsp;

Working with the Utica Institute Museum, johnson is 3d printing a shell for this prototype modeled after the Kodak Brownie. The device houses a periscope mirror arrangement with a laser etched plexi glass slide casting an image of a historic building over the contemporary site. Mounted in the top is a small speaker which will play a 30 second collage of oral histories from former students with memories of the site. The original positioning of the aperture slide and film advance dial are now the locations to play the oral history track and select the corresponding site. There will be plexi slides and accompanying oral histories to accommodate three sites on the bus tour.

The prototype is still in development ~ The shell is complete and can be fully unfolded to reveal the innerworkings to tour groups. The wiring is complete but the speaker is cutting out and not playing the full track while also only allowing for one play. johnson will be troubleshooting with an electrician friend in November to iron out the final details.
 The etching of the photograph is currently a silhouette stand-in. It is curious the way the eye focuses back and forth between the plexi etching and the scene beyond. johnson is going to experiment with creating a vector line drawing of the building which will make visible more of the scene beyond within the building etching to see how that feels to viewers.In October 2024, johnson is joining other Community Fellow cohort members for a panel discussion at Across the Archipelagos: The Diaspora Solidarities Lab Final Symposium at the Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture in Charleston, SC.

Gathering to the Gulf

a Coastal Streams watershed community

Gathering to the Gulf was created as part of the Wide Horizons program, bringing together art, science, and action for 8th grade students on the Gulf Coast. Led by the Walter Anderson Museum of Art in Ocean Springs, MS, Wide Horizons is a partnership between the museum, Pascagoula River Audobon Center and University of Southern Mississippi Marine Education Center which blends marine science, environmental history, geography, and multimedia self-expression in order to deepen understanding about the environmental and societal importance of the Gulf of Mexico, its landscapes, and its wildlife. A core component of Wide Horizons are the Climate Action Projects which pair artists with groups of 8th grade students

in multi-day collaborative art engagements including immersive field experiences and the creation of a public facing art work to share with the community expressing their relationship to the Gulf of Mexico.&#38;nbsp;

	johnson facilitated conversations via Zoom on four occasions with 8th grade students from St. Martin Middle School as they collaborated on their goals, focus, and preferred medium and audience for the artwork they would create together. Having decided on clay and their immediate friends, neighbors, and friends of neighbors as the audience they could have the greatest impact on, the group then “immersed” themselves in the Pascagoula River wetlands at the Audobon Center just a town over from their home.&#38;nbsp;Building off the Audobon Center curriculum, johnson led field trips of the wetlands discussing local features and the impacts of climate change on the immediate watershed and neighborhoods. johnson and the students then&#38;nbsp;developed a week-long art engagement held at the Walter Anderson Museum studios. johnson and the students developed press molds to create a series of watershed sculptures to gift to their community in an interactive presentation at the museum including story sharing, watershed education, a gifting ceremony, and an interactive Uno-derived card game to win additional sculptures!

Wide Horizons is inspired by the art, writings, and philosophies of Walter Inglis Anderson (1903-1965), an almost mythological figure in the Southern artist pantheon, Anderson was a believer in the paradigm-shifting potentials of experiential education and exploration. The museum uses Anderson’s legacy as a blueprint for connecting ecological and societal cause-and-effect with the agency of the individual to direct civic and environmental action.&#38;nbsp;

The Meaning in Making

The Meaning in Making was a Mississippi Humanities Council (MHC) funded project to expand the historical narrative of making in the 39203 zip code through community voices and academic research. Led by Anik Kurkjian, Director of Makerspace &#38;amp; STEAM Programs, The Bean Path pursued this&#38;nbsp; initiative in recognition that collecting and reflecting on stories of making with their own community would deepen their relationships within the surrounding neighborhoods and begin to cultivate a shared language and understanding of the role of making in our lives.

As a Black-owned Makerspace operating in a historically African-American community with a renowned history of cultural production, The Bean Path empowers local makers not only with the equipment to imagine their future, but connects them to the story of making which is shaping their present.
The planning grant funding provided by MHC has increased The Bean Path’s access to the historical narrative of their community and understanding
of their own role in that historical narrative.

	&#38;nbsp;johnson worked with Anik to shape this community engaged art work toward centering The Bean Path’s Makerspace role in their 39203 zip code as being a resource convening local Makers to imagine and build the future. The two recognized that this must begin with the use of the word “Maker” which is not necessarily a commonly used term for the everyday creativity residents are engaged in. The Margaret Walker Center was brought in as a partner to help assess and be curious about the local history of making, Archivist Angela Stewart grounding our group in local history as a life-long resident while Jackson State University Art Historian Brittany Murtaugh assisted with additional research focusing in on the culture of making in 39175 from parades and local artists to trade crafts and the Liberty House cooperative craft stores of the Poor Peoples Corporation founded in 1965. While the historical research was being conducted, johnson advised Anik as she identified and built relationships with an intergenerational and interdisciplinary range of local Makers to participate in a group conversation and oral history collection. Working with long-time collaborator Monique Davis of the Center for Art &#38;amp; Public Exchange at the Mississippi Museum of Art, johnson and Davis led a day long gathering of conversation and a meal capped with interviews / oral history collection of the participating Makers.&#38;nbsp;

		<description>Artists At Work
	As the pandemic reality unfolded in 2020 and into 2021, the curatorial and production company The Office (New York &#38;amp; London) set out to craft a social impact project “inspired by the Depression-era Works Progress Administration” which would be “designed to give artists resources to continue to produce work” and “build new structures and partnerships that will help to sustain the creative sector in a post-pandemic America.” A stated outcome was to “embed the arts more deeply into communities to the benefit of society as a whole.”The Office centered artists in their response to the pandemic because, “Artists are the messengers who will lead us into the future—their work will help us to understand our new world; their creativity and inspirations will both express and allow us to maintain our humanity through trials that feel inconceivable.“

The Artists At Work project took place among artist cohorts and communities in Los Angeles County, the Mississippi Delta, the Greater Chattanooga “Thrive” region, and along the Southern US Border, “Borderlands”. daniel johnson is honored to have been selected to work alongside the Mississippi Center for Cultural Production (Sipp Culture) and the Jackson Hinds Comprehensive Health Center to imagine a new relationship which connects their common commitments to community health in the town of Utica, MS.&#38;nbsp; This residency took place from March 2022 - March 2023.

Over the course of 2022 and into 2023, daniel johnson’s Artist At Work project was the performance of a&#38;nbsp; patient, curiosity-driven relationship building artwork to connect the work of the Mississippi
Center for Cultural Production and the Jackson-Hinds Comprehensive Health Center in Utica, MS. There are an array of connections between Sipp Culture’s community engagement around food, culture, and storytelling in Utica and the long-time commitment the Jackson-Hinds Comprehensive Health Center has had to wellness in the town of Utica. To offer just an inkling of how deep these roots go, the Utica Clinic was the first of the JHCHC clinics and when he was just a child, Sipp Culture Co-Director Carlton Turner remembers getting dental work done there. He and JHCHC CEO Dr. Jasmin Chapman made the connection in our first meeting that she may very well have been Carlton’s first dentist.
Over the course of a year, johnson spent time getting to know the Utica area by frequenting businesses, exploring the area on his tricycle, attending community events, and generally researching possibilities and curiosities of the partners (like the history of their properties). These adventures took him to the MS Department of Archives and History, Raymond County Courthouse, the Mississippi Community Health Workers Association conference, Main Street and Depot Street businesses, the Utica Library, and more. Through months of periodic porch conversations and strategic imaginings,&#38;nbsp; it became clear that Food Access and Food As Medicine were areas of alignment for both partners and part of wider conversations taking place among Utica residents. We all leaned into what it takes for both organizations to say yes to projects and how communication and relationships within JHCHC can support collaboration between Sipp Culture and the local JHCHC Utica clinic.&#38;nbsp;

Along the way, we built an understanding of the food-initiatives that had occurred and were planned for JHCHC such as Food Prescriptions, American Heart Association cooking classes, and a soon to open food pantry at the Utica clinic. Thinking has begun connecting Sipp farm schedules to potential produce prescriptions for Utica patients living with diabetes. Overlaps in certifications for food handling have been discussed between the organizations. And Sipp Culture is now pursuing its own research on how to integrate the learnings and practice of Community Health Workers into their operations. The Community Health Center Association of Mississippi has shared their interest to work together to create an Arts &#38;amp; Culture expertise which supports the work of community health workers and could be a continuing education opportunity to expand their skills.
As the end of the residency drew to a close, johnson and the clinic collaborated on a project to test and celebrate their ability to collaborate across the partner organizations. From the very beginning, Jackson-Hinds had voiced that their number one goal in the partnership was to increase the utilization of their services by Utica residents. To achieve this goal, johnson and the clinic worked to design roadside placards sharing services and times as well as appointment booking info for the clinic. There had never been a roadside sign communicating this information. In the course of producing the placards, we established how future artists might inhabit studio space at the clinic, what sinks they might use, what is needed from the central office and marketing throughout the process, and best ways to communicate. It was a success ~ and now there is a foundation upon which Sipp Culture and the Utica clinic can build on. In fact, they are continuing this work together in One Nation One Project.

		<description>
Archiving the Rainbow Cooperative

For 40 years the Rainbow Natural Grocery Cooperative was an institution in Mississippi. Beginning in the basement of the YMCA in the wake of the 1979 Easter Flood, the Rainbow rose up through the work of a core community committed to securing the healthiest possible food at the lowest possible price - not just for themselves but as a storefront in Jackson, MS. Aside from being one of the few long-running examples of a successful consumer cooperative in Mississippi, Rainbow became a locus for all types of wellness-related and arts communities. I was lucky to serve as their Outreach Coordinator from 2006 - 2011 and as Vice President on their Board of Directors for a few years.&#38;nbsp;
In 2020, the Rainbow Cooperative finally shut their doors for the last time and by October 2021 it occurred to me that whatever remaining documents and artifacts of this movement remained would not likely be retained much longer. I reached out to the final General Manager Patrick Jerome and began an art work to gather and protect what remained so that the story of Rainbow could be researched and told in many different ways as time goes on. The hope was that the Mississippi Department of Archives and History would be interested in serving as the repository.

	Gratitude to MS Dept of Archives &#38;amp; History Acquisitions &#38;amp; Collections Coordinator Laura Anne Heller who instantly agreed that Rainbow was a “historic business wh[ose] story should be preserved and available for researchers.” With Laura as our point person, we were able to coordinate the donation of a wide range of documents including decades of Financials, Board Member Binders, collected news articles, staff notebooks, and newsletters. Additionally artifacts such as t-shirts, nametags, and more were accessioned alongside thousands of digital images. These donations came not only from what remained in the files of the Rainbow Cooperative at it’s closing but from Members and staff we directly reached out to. MDAH was also helpful in organizing a public event for Members to come and learn about this archiving project.
MDAH continues to be interested in expanding their Rainbow Cooperative collection through donations from past community members. Contact Laura Anne Heller if you have anything you believe would be meaningful in telling the story of the Rainbow ~ lheller@mdah.ms.gov or 601-576-6889.

The Establishment of a Free Southern Theater

During a period of intensifying
civil rights organizing activity in Mississippi, three young artist activists came
together at Tougaloo College in Jackson, MS with the belief that theater would “add
a valuable and necessary dimension to the current civil rights movement.” John
O’Neal and Doris Derby were Field Organizers with the Student Nonviolent
Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and Gilbert Moses was on the staff of the
Mississippi Free Press. With backgrounds in both traditional organizing and in
the arts, these three young people set out to create an integrated theater
company in 1963, realizing the beginnings of their vision in 1964. This short
period of time spanned the build-up to and implementation of the Freedom Summer
initiative spearheaded by organizations such as the Congress of Racial Equality
(CORE) and SNCC, both working alongside other organizations through the Council
of Federated Organizations (COFO). This period was an all-hands-on-deck situation
for the movement organizations coordinating in Mississippi. Considering that
time and energy were used so intentionally during this period, a deeper look at
the development of this organization is warranted. This virtual exhibition
offers a brief overview of the beginnings of the Free Southern Theater; their
purpose and role as communicated through their founding documents, early appeals for support, glimpses of early Tougaloo student training plans, documents of their developing organizational model, O’Neal’s reflections on the relationship between arts and activism, and a sense of the push and pull of getting up and running in the first half of 1964.

Doris Derby, undated photograph from her own collection displayed on her shelf during an artpapers.org interview. Derby stayed in Jackson when FST relocated to New Orleans and in 1966 joined Southern Media, Inc. working as a field photographer throughout Mississippi

The use of theater as a movement strategy during this famously active
time of organizing in the United States South receives little attention, and
yet the resources expended by movement organizers to realize the vision of the
Free Southern Theater suggests that the effort was considered a valuable and necesary movement strategy. As evidenced in the documents assembled for this virtual exhibition, a great deal of consideration was given to every
detail and dollar spent. All action – from the creative to the practical – was performed
with purpose and aligned with their overarching aims to gain greater autonomy
for Black communities in Mississippi. Through understanding their assessment of
the oppressive circumstances facing Black individuals in Mississippi and their
rationale for the use of theater in addressing this oppression, our own
contemporary efforts to continue the fight for human rights in America is
bolstered. Arts and culture as necessary tools in the fight against all forms
of oppression often continue to be seen through the lens of the role that they
play in marketing; posters, fliers, and banners. As Free Southern Theater demonstrates, the arts play a more
expansive role in telling the stories of the oppressed, building solidarity, and projecting visions toward a liberated future. The story of the Free Southern
Theater continues to offer a model of artistic practice and production wherein the process itself emulates the outcomes being sought. Free Southern Theater not only produced
effective messaging and staged narratives to shift the conversation around
civil rights in the South, they enacted a process which itself was a vessel for
manifesting the types of expressions of agency and autonomy they sought to make
more broadly available throughout Southern society.Next Section: A Theater with Purpose &#38;gt;

	In Watersheds, johnson ponders the lines which tie people together; the connections and disconnections forged between natural limits and man-made structures layered upon them.

Printed on plexiglass, these digital prints of cut paper and found object assemblages reflect their surroundings as if a collection in a display case. The “in progress” style of the compositions

invites viewers to imagine picking up the pieces and continuing the creative process.
